If you have an edu e-mail address, you can get free music at Ruckus. It's DRMed, but the player doesn't include malware -- one or two incorporated ads, but they're not intrusive. What you get -- access to tons of albums, ranging from current hits to really obscure pieces -- is way worthwhile. They definitely have a deal with Warner, and I think Sony too, so basically their entire libraries are available. For you to listen to. For free. In about thirty seconds. Ruckus.

Except that like many awesome things it isn't Macpatible. And you have to make sure to keep up with the...what do they call it? Refresh dates? Where you have to click once a month. And if you're looking for something you have to be super specific with the song title or artist name.
But other than that I am a big big fan of Ruckus and wish I could use it on my Powerbook.

Aw, I just assumed they'd have a Mac version . . . that's stupid; a huge, disproportionate number of college kids have Macs. That really sucks, and it's dumb -- no wonder they're trying so hard for new members.

You don't have to click once a month, I don't think -- once you open the Ruckus player and try to play the song, it automatically re-gets permission, thankfully. I have stuff I haven't played for months, and when I click on the song to play it, it goes "hold on a second," checks with the server, and starts to play five seconds later.
